Overview
Terdrom’s hot spring and nunnery stand below a Tibetan valley of retreat caves. Also called Zhotö Tidro, the place belongs to a sacred landscape associated with Yeshe Tsogyal and Padmasambhava.
Why this place is sacred
The Drikung lineage’s own account calls the thermal spring sacred and places the surrounding pilgrimage area within the Drikung Mandala. This establishes a religious connection beyond the water’s use for bathing.
Experience and orientation
The lower spring and nunnery are the orientation point. Reaching the upper caves is a separate undertaking; Nekhor describes a journey of several hours on foot.
Context and lineage
In the public account shared by Nekhor, court opposition forced Padmasambhava and Yeshe Tsogyal to appear to leave Tibet. Instead they withdrew to Zhotö Tidro. What looked like exile became a period of retreat and teaching, in which Yeshe Tsogyal received profound instruction. This story concerns the wider valley; it does not place the upper meditation cave inside the lower bathing area.
Treasury of Lives identifies Terdrom as a Drikung Kagyu hermitage and nunnery, with a formal meditation-site development associated with Rinchen Puntsok in the sixteenth century.
