Konji Waterfall

Konji Waterfall belongs to the religious landscape of Konjiji in Tokushima. Official regional interpretation describes pilgrims purifying themselves at the falls before climbing to the temple. That sequence gives the waterfall its meaning: a place of preparation within a larger journey, where water practice and mountain worship remain connected through the guidance of temple practitioners.

Preparation is the central theme. The movement from water toward temple makes the falls part of a religious approach, even when the modern visitor encounters that tradition through a short, arranged session.

The strongest sources document a practice rather than a miraculous origin. An East Tokushima account follows a guided visit with a temple monk and identifies Kongō Zaō Daigongen in the temple's worship. The waterfall sits within this setting of mountain asceticism. The evidence does not justify assigning it an ancient founding date or borrowing a creation story from another waterfall.

JNTO describes takigyō at Konjiji, and regional interpretation records the importance of guidance. Treat participation as a temple activity with requirements set by its practitioners. The presence of a visitor program does not make the waterfall an unrestricted place for independent training.

Konjiji belongs to the Shikoku thirty-six Fudō pilgrimage network. That is distinct from the better-known eighty-eight-temple route. The waterfall's relationship to the temple supports the entry, but does not make the falls a separately numbered pilgrimage temple.
