Shirataki Falls, Toba

Shirataki in Toba is part of a mountain honored as the presence of Shirataki Daimyōjin. The waterfall belongs within that wider sanctuary, where purification and personal prayer continue under local care. A Kōgakkan University account tells of Sato, a woman who loved a Zen monk near the end of the Edo period. After the monk was driven away, she followed him to Shirataki. The pair are said to have lived there for about fifty years under the deity's protection. When she died before him, he composed a poem of continuing care. A poem monument preserves their association with the place.

The custodial website offers guided takigyō. Kōgakkan describes the practice as purification and an offering of personal wishes to Shirataki. The published explanation is context for understanding the rite, not a substitute for instruction from those responsible for it.
