Overview
Koyasu Kannonji in Suzuka is a Shingon Buddhist temple whose White-Robed Kannon is associated with prayers for childbirth. It belongs to regional pilgrimage routes, while its own story looks toward the nearby sea. This temple is distinct from Koyasu Shrine in Hachioji.
Why this place is sacred
The temple is identified as stop 19 of the Ise Saikoku Kannon route and stop 16 of the Mie Shikoku route.
Context and lineage
The temple account preserved by the Ise pilgrimage organisation tells of the White-Robed Kannon appearing from the bay on a drum. The striking image of a sacred figure carried from the water explains a local devotional relationship. The temple preserves this account as a legend of Kannon’s arrival.
