Overview

Pura Tirta Sudamala in Banjar Sedit, Bebalang, is a Balinese Hindu purification temple in Bangli. Its springs and water spouts are used in melukat, a religious practice of cleansing and renewal. The temple is maintained through the responsibilities of its local community. It should be approached as a living sacred place, rather than a waterfall attraction with an optional ritual added for visitors.

Why this place is sacred

Melukat is understood within Balinese Hindu life as purification of more than the visible body. People may come with hopes of release from burdens or affliction, but that spiritual meaning should not be equated with a verified treatment for illness. The local custodians determine what is appropriate at the temple and how a visitor may participate.

Context and lineage

The account published by Bangli's administration links Tirta Sudamala with Pura Kehen. It tells of a Brahmin, Ida Brahmana Hender, sent by the king to find springs for ritual purification. This places the water within a relationship between temples and community obligations, rather than treating it as an isolated natural resource. The local account also explains that different spouts have different ceremonial purposes; their arrangement is not a universal sequence for every visitor to copy.

Traditions and practice

Ask the attendants for guidance before entering the water area. Some spouts are associated with particular ceremonies, so do not assume that all are intended for general use. Watching respectfully is an alternative to participation. Neither a paid tour nor a photograph of someone else's ritual grants permission to reproduce it.

Plan your visit

Confirm that your destination is Tirta Sudamala at Sedit in Bangli, not another site sharing a purification name. Arrange transport and ask about the descent, changing facilities, water conditions, and current access before arrival. Wet surfaces and changes of level may affect the route. Do not assume the water is suitable for drinking.

Respectful visit

Follow local requirements for temple clothing and any temporary restrictions. Ask about customary eligibility rules without dismissing or generalizing them across Bali. Do not photograph people bathing or praying without permission, and keep soap, litter, and personal products out of the sacred water.
