Gianyar’s account follows Rsi Markandeya and his followers on a difficult journey from Taro toward Mount Agung. Exhausted by the heat, they rested here. The sage made carvings and prayed to Shiva and Vishnu for life-giving water. A spring appeared in Pangkung Dawa and became known as Tirta Dawa Gunung Kawi. The narrative is retained as tradition without assigning it an unsupported historical date.
The name Gunung Kawi is explained locally through carving and the mountain symbolism of the worship setting. Similar names do not make separate temples the same site.
