Mogao Caves

At Dunhuang, Mogao’s cave sanctuaries preserve paintings and sculpture spanning a millennium of Buddhist art. Their position along the Silk Routes connected the site with exchanges of religious ideas and artistic forms. UNESCO describes 492 cells and sanctuaries; that is a heritage inventory, not a promise that all caves are open to visitors.

The caves are individual religious spaces within a long cliff-side ensemble. Their images belong to different periods and artistic programmes, so a single chamber cannot stand for everything at Mogao. The site is also a place of sustained conservation work: presenting the paintings to visitors has to be balanced with protecting their surfaces and environment.

A useful way to approach the complex is to attend closely to the caves included in the authorized visit, allowing their differences to emerge rather than expecting to see the entire historic inventory.

Buddhist images and narrative painting connect these excavated spaces with teaching, devotion and religious patronage. Their survival gives the site significance beyond the age of any one object: the ensemble preserves changing expressions of Buddhist art across many generations.

Follow the route and interpretation provided by the Dunhuang Academy. Time spent with one painted scene can offer a more attentive encounter than trying to collect as many cave numbers as possible.

The Getty Conservation Institute and Dunhuang Academy studied visitor capacity and appropriate light levels for Cave 85. Access is therefore part of conservation, rather than a guarantee attached to the total number of historic caves.

The Dunhuang Academy publishes access notices. Weather and conservation decisions can change what is available; confirm arrangements with the Academy before a visit.
