Goðafoss

Goðafoss on Iceland's Skjálfandafljót is associated with a story about the country's conversion to Christianity. The account has become an important part of the waterfall's public identity, but its date and evidence need care. Inclusion here rests on a specific religious narrative attached to the place, not proof that the falls were an ancient temple or continuing cult site.

The story gives a physical place to the memory of religious change. Its cultural importance can be acknowledged even when the event it depicts is not securely established as history.

The familiar story says that the lawspeaker Þorgeir, after helping settle Iceland's acceptance of Christianity, returned home and cast images of the Norse gods into the falls. Svavar Sigmundsson's discussion for the University of Iceland's Vísindavefurinn traces the waterfall tale to much later recording. Medieval evidence for Þorgeir's role in conversion should therefore not be treated as evidence for the idol-casting episode.

The sources do not establish a present public ceremony at the falls. A visitor might reflect on how communities remember changes in belief, while recognizing that this is an interpretive suggestion rather than an inherited ritual or an invitation to deposit objects in the water.

The protected-area account labels the episode as folklore, while the university discussion examines its historical transmission. That distinction allows the story to be told coherently without using the name Waterfall of the Gods as proof of an otherwise undocumented ancient religious practice.
