At Balıklı in Istanbul, a spring sanctuary gives material focus to the Orthodox title of the Theotokos as the Life-Giving Spring.

Context and lineage
The church’s public account tells of Leo, before he became emperor, helping a blind traveler who needed water. A voice directed him to a spring and told him to use its water on the man’s eyes. In the tradition, the man recovered his sight; Leo later built a church in gratitude. The healing and prophecy remain attributed religious narrative.
The sanctuary has been rebuilt through Istanbul’s history. The present nineteenth-century church is distinct from the foundation associated with Leo.
