At Talakaveri in Kodagu, the Brahma Kundike marks the sacred source of the Kaveri. A small spring and its surrounding tank draw attention to the beginning of a river that travels far beyond these hills. The temple setting honours Kaveramma, the river goddess, alongside Agasthiswara, whose name recalls the sage Agastya. Pilgrimage begins here with water close enough to approach on foot.

The religious landscape extends beyond a single pool, while the spring remains the focus of devotion at Talakaveri itself.

Swami Harshananda’s account in Hindupedia preserves one telling of Kaveri’s emergence. Raised as King Kavera’s foster-daughter and married to Agastya, she travelled with the sage in the form of water inside his kamandalu, a mendicant’s water vessel. A powerful wind overturned it near the Sahyadri mountains, and she began to flow as a river. Other tellings vary; this version is presented as that author’s account rather than combined with the separate story of Ganesha as a crow.

Tula Sankramana in October brings pilgrims to witness the spring’s emergence celebrated as the goddess’s manifestation. The district administration describes a sudden upsurge of water at the festival. Devotees offer worship, and traditional accounts describe taking holy water home. Confirm the announced ritual time for the relevant year; a recurring festival is not a guarantee of a particular spectacle on an ordinary visit.

Talakaveri is reached by road in the Brahmagiri hills above Bhagamandala. Check Karnataka Tourism and Kodagu district notices for access conditions and festival arrangements. A current assessment of mobile reception, step-free access and permitted bathing areas was not available. Confirm those details locally rather than assuming that access to the temple also permits entry to every tank or hillside path.
