Saut d'Eau

Saut-d’Eau, also called Sodo, is a waterfall pilgrimage place in Haiti's Centre department. Catholic devotion to the Virgin and Haitian Vodou relationships with the lwa meet here without becoming identical traditions. The water, trees and surrounding community belong to that religious landscape. This is a cultural profile, not a recommendation to travel under Haiti's present security conditions.

The falls bring devotion into contact with a living watershed. The mission's reporting also records community concern about diminishing flows, connecting protection of the site with farming and the survival of local sources of water.

A public account recorded by the United Nations mission tells of Fortuné, who becomes lost with his horse near a grove and sees a woman crowned with stars carrying an infant. The apparition is understood as the Virgin, and the story helps explain the place's pilgrimage significance. Published versions differ on the date and details; the mission's date conflicts with scholarly summaries placing the tradition in the nineteenth century, so no single apparition year is asserted here.

In the same report, Vodou priest André Guerrier describes the trees as inhabited by lwa including Bossou and forms of Ezili, and the cascades as the Virgin's bathing place. These voices express religious understandings, not independently verified supernatural events.

Haitian writers Melissa Beralus and Kelly Paulemon describe the July pilgrimage and devotional purification bathing. Their account explains a practice within its religious setting; it is not an invitation to reproduce a ceremony without community guidance. Never photograph worshippers or intimate bathing without permission.
