Overview
Construction began in 1341 and continued across generations, leaving a Brabantine Gothic church whose fabric records Halle's devotional and civic history. Official regional tourism information points to medieval apostle figures, a fifteenth-century font, a later pulpit, and cannonballs associated in local tradition with Mary's protection during the siege of 1489. The basilica is not simply a shell around one object.
It is an active church whose architecture, treasury, and regular worship make the Black Virgin intelligible as part of a living place.
