Overview
Mount Kenya is a sacred landmark for communities including the Agĩkũyũ and Meru. Forests, farms and settlements around the mountain belong to this cultural landscape as well as to its ecological setting.

Context and lineage
In the Kikuyu creation account presented by the National Museums of Kenya, Ngai gives Gikuyu a view of the land from the mountain. Gikuyu and Mumbi become the ancestral couple. Their daughters and the men who arrive in response to prayer beneath a sacred fig tree establish the ancestry of the clans. This museum presentation preserves a public account of kinship and belonging.
Traditions and practice
Sacred memory continues alongside farming, conservation and contemporary religious life. The museum’s account explains an inherited relationship rather than a visitor ceremony. No rite is required to appreciate the mountain from a permitted public location.
