Overview
The square belongs to the everyday civic life of the capital as well as its religious calendar. Public gatherings and celebrations take place here; during the Meskel season, the Demera bonfire becomes a focal point of communal devotion. The same urban space can therefore be encountered in very different ways depending on when one visits.
Why this place is sacred
In Christian tradition, the discovery of the True Cross is associated with Saint Helena. The fire gathering gives this sacred remembrance a public, shared form. Its spiritual meaning belongs to the worshipping community; the flames are not presented here as evidence of a supernatural event witnessed by modern observers.
