Overview
Sherpa communities live with Chomolungma as part of a sacred landscape of mountains, monasteries and settlements. The summit on the Nepal–China border is only one part of that relationship.
Why this place is sacred
UNESCO describes Sherpa conservation leadership as rooted in cultural responsibilities toward the landscape. Buddhist respect for living beings and community institutions such as the nawa system connect spiritual life with the management of forests, fields and grazing.
Experience and orientation

Context and lineage
Tibetan Buddhist tradition associates Chomolungma with Miyo Lang Zangma, one of the Five Sisters of Long Life. That association gives the mountain a personal, protective presence within a religious landscape. This is an attributed sacred identification, not a claim that every Sherpa household tells an identical origin story.
Traditions and practice
Expedition pujas seek blessing before journeys on the mountain. Their religious meaning belongs to the people conducting them; attendance does not make a visitor a ritual specialist. UNESCO also records contemporary Sherpa efforts to sustain customary environmental knowledge under changing climatic and economic conditions.

Perspectives and open questions
UNESCO provides the principal cultural account used here. The visitor section identifies what still needs local confirmation.

Access and arrival
For the Nepal side, consult Sagarmatha National Park for current entry arrangements. Khumbu trekking and a summit expedition require very different preparation; this page is a cultural orientation, not a climbing route. Lukla and Namche Bazaar are commonly used approach settlements. No site-wide mobile coverage or emergency response time was verified; obtain a route-specific evacuation plan before entering remote terrain. Confirm seasonal conditions with the park.
Respectful visit
Ask before photographing worship or joining a puja. Leave religious objects where they are, and follow monastery instructions. A commercial expedition booking does not confer authority over local ceremonies.
