Mosi-oa-Tunya / Victoria Falls

Mosi-oa-Tunya, also widely known as Victoria Falls, is a waterfall landscape shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe. Its global recognition as a natural landmark can obscure the religious relationships maintained around its waters and islands. Heritage documentation records traditions important to Leya communities, whose connections to the place long precede its colonial English name.

The sacred landscape extends beyond the visible curtain of water. It includes places, responsibilities and histories whose significance may not be apparent to someone following a sightseeing route along the gorge.

Management and historical sources describe sacred places used by communities associated with Chief Mukuni and Chief Sekute, including relationships with islands and the waters below the falls. The city study also records Bedyango's place in Leya historical memory. These are particular traditions within a diverse region; they should not be replaced by a generic Zambezi story or by the claim that one community speaks for everyone.

Heritage records describe worship and rain-related traditions. This profile does not identify ceremonial access points or give procedures for participation. Commercial excursions to an island at the falls are not equivalent to an invitation to community religious observances.
