Howick Falls (KwaNogqaza)

Howick Falls, also known as KwaNogqaza, is a waterfall of the uMngeni River in KwaZulu-Natal. South African Tourism identifies its importance to sangomas and associates the place with ancestral spirits. The familiar public attraction therefore has a religious dimension that cannot be understood only through measurements, photographs or descriptions of the water's force.

The falls hold different meanings for sightseers and for people whose practice involves relationships with ancestors. A public description can acknowledge both without making private religious life into an attraction staged for outsiders.

uMngeni Municipality's 2024 festival brief calls for public narration of Inkanyamba as the snake believed to live in and protect Howick Falls. It assigns the storytelling role to the museum. This documents a locally presented account without turning the serpent into a zoological claim or making one version the belief of every Zulu person. The brief describes a planned event, not evidence that the event took place.

The national tourism account recognizes reverence by sangomas. It does not authorize a visitor to join their rites or to approach the pool. Claims that particular practitioners can safely enter dangerous places belong to narrative and should never be converted into physical safety advice.
