Overview
The grotto belongs to a mountain landscape and a continuing life of worship. Its dedication connects it with the basilica at Saint-Maximin, where relics are venerated: the two are distinct places with different approaches.
A visit to the cave involves a walk from the plateau. It can be a visit in its own right; completing the long-distance pilgrimage is not a prerequisite.
Experience and orientation
Plan the return walk as well as the ascent. Saint-Pilon is an optional mountain extension, not a necessary part of visiting the grotto; consult the regional park’s itinerary before adding it.

Context and lineage
In the Provençal account preserved by the sanctuary, Mary Magdalene and other disciples are expelled from Palestine and placed in a boat without sail or rudder. They reach the coast at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. After preaching in Marseille, she withdraws to this cave for thirty years of prayer and contemplation. The mountain becomes the place of retreat within a story that begins on the shore.
This is a regional Christian tradition, rather than a journey recorded in the Gospels. The sanctuary’s chronology distinguishes that sacred account from the later history of the religious communities caring for the grotto.
The medieval Golden Legend gives the retreat an angelic rhythm: at the seven canonical hours, angels lift Mary to hear the heavenly choir. As her death approaches, she sends word to Maximin. Angels bring her to his oratory, where she receives communion before dying. This telling links the mountain retreat with the burial tradition at Saint-Maximin.
The sanctuary records the installation of Dominicans in 1295, their departure during the Revolution, and their return in 1859 through Henri-Dominique Lacordaire’s work.

The sanctuary estimates 30–45 minutes on foot to the grotto. This is the approach time, not the duration of the whole visit. In summer, check the official daily forest-access restrictions through the sanctuary’s access page before setting out.
The sanctuary’s Hostellerie handles lodging and meal enquiries separately from the grotto. Check availability directly.
Respectful visit
Wear footwear suitable for the walking approach and clothing appropriate for entering a place of worship.
Follow the signs and the custodians’ instructions before taking photographs.
