The saint’s association with Emperor Akbar’s hoped-for son is part of the shrine’s devotional reputation. Petitioners seek his blessing for children and other deeply held wishes.
Experience and orientation
The white marble building and its pierced screens occupy a courtyard shared with an active mosque. A visit to the tomb is not the same as touring the palace buildings elsewhere in Fatehpur Sikri.
Context and lineage
The story connecting the saint and Emperor Akbar centers on succession. Akbar sought Salim Chishti’s blessing for a son; after the birth of the future emperor Jahangir, the child was named Salim in the saint’s honor. The association helped shape Fatehpur Sikri’s importance to Akbar. UNESCO dates the tomb to 1580–81 and records later embellishment. The blessing belongs to the devotional account, while the mausoleum’s construction is a separate historical claim.

Visitors offer flowers, pray at the tomb and tie threads to its lattice screens as petitions. The practice belongs to the shrine’s living Sufi devotion and should follow the custodians’ current instructions.
