They reached Gheel, where her father eventually found and killed them. Devotion grew around her burial, and Gheel became associated with care for people experiencing mental illness.
The Ohio shrine carries this tradition of intercession into a community of prayer; the story is hagiography, not a clinical explanation of illness.
