Overview
Merapi is an active volcano within the sacred geography of Yogyakarta’s court. Its relationship with the palace and the southern sea gives the mountain a place in Javanese accounts of guardianship and political responsibility.

Context and lineage
In the Yogyakarta palace’s public account, Panembahan Senopati receives an extraordinary egg associated with the Queen of the Southern Sea. Ki Juru Mertani warns that eating it would transform him. Ki Juru Taman consumes it instead and becomes Kiai Sapu Jagat, guardian of Merapi. The narrative connects the court’s authority with a continuing duty of remembrance at the mountain.
Traditions and practice
The palace describes Labuhan Merapi as a court offering ceremony. Articles connected with the royal household are carried in an organised observance expressing gratitude and the relationship between ruler, community and landscape. This public description is not a set of instructions for visitors to reproduce the rite.
