Milk Grotto, Bethlehem

Near Bethlehem’s Nativity complex, the Milk Grotto gathers devotion around Mary caring for the infant Jesus. The Franciscan Custody presents it as a Marian shrine visited by Christian pilgrims and Muslim women. Its identity is distinct from the Nativity Grotto: the story here concerns nourishment, shelter and the hopes people bring to prayer.

The shrine’s significance lies in the tenderness of its central account and the petitions that have grown around it. Christian devotion seeks Mary’s intercession. The Custody also describes Muslim women honoring Mary here; that shared presence should not be described as agreement on every theological claim.

In the tradition recounted by the Franciscan Custody, Mary paused to feed Jesus during the family’s flight from Herod. Drops of milk fell as she nursed him, and the rock changed from pink to white. The Custody connects the setting with Matthew’s account of Joseph being warned to take the child and his mother to Egypt, while presenting the milk-and-stone episode as a later tradition associated with this place.

The distinction matters: the biblical flight and the grotto’s local account are related, but they are not the same textual story. The white stone gives the shrine a visible connection with its remembered scene of maternal care.

Pilgrims come with petitions concerning motherhood, and the Custody describes letters and photographs kept as testimonies of answered prayer. These are religious testimonies, not evidence of medical effectiveness. The connected chapel offers another setting for silent prayer and Eucharistic adoration within the Catholic tradition.

The Nativity sanctuary is nearby, but a visit to it does not establish that the Milk Grotto is open at the same time.
