Altötting's official pilgrimage history tells of a boy who fell into a river in 1489. His mother carried him to the image of Mary and prayed; in the shrine's tradition, the child returned to life. Accounts of two boys' recoveries that year helped establish the pilgrimage. The votive pictures around the Chapel of Grace continue the same language of petition and thanksgiving.
