Shroud of Turin

The Shroud rests in a sealed conservation case in the last chapel of Turin Cathedral's left aisle. It is not normally visible and is removed only for public expositions. The Catholic Church has not defined the cloth's authenticity as doctrine.

The securely documented history begins in fourteenth-century Lirey. The House of Savoy acquired the cloth in 1453 and transferred it to Turin in 1578. A 1988 radiocarbon study dated the tested sample to the medieval period; later critiques and alternative studies have not produced a consensus overturning that result. The image's formation and the cloth's earlier history remain disputed.
