Shimogamo-jinja Shrine is an active Shinto shrine in Kyoto.

Shimogamo is entered through Tadasu no Mori, a surviving woodland at the meeting of the Kamo and Takano rivers. The forest changes the terms of arrival before the main sanctuary appears. Shimogamo's history reaches at least into the centuries before Heian-kyō became the imperial capital. That antiquity is one reason the shrine is included in UNESCO's Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. The designation protects a cultural landscape in which rebuilt architecture, old woodland, and active ceremony remain interdependent. It would be misleading to imply that every visible structure has survived unchanged from the shrine's earliest period.

Shimogamo is most rewarding when forest and ritual water are read alongside the enshrined Kamo deities. The resulting experience is not generic tranquility. It is a distinctly local sacred geography, maintained through worship, festival, and custodianship at the lower Kamo shrine.
