Overview
Prato Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Stephen, preserves the Sacra Cintola, a belt venerated as belonging to Mary. Its public exhibitions are a defining part of the city’s religious life. Scholarship also connects the relic with historical maternity devotion; this does not establish a current childbirth-specific visitor rite.

Context and lineage
According to tradition, Mary gave the belt to the apostle Thomas at her Assumption. A later story tells how Michele received it as a marriage gift in Jerusalem, brought it to Prato and donated it in 1172. The cathedral museum distinguishes this legendary transmission from securely documented evidence of the relic’s presence in the early thirteenth century.
