Context and lineage
The Ministry for the Environment recounts Ngāti Rangiwewehi kōrero in which Hinerua and Pekehāua are kaitiaki of the waterway and kōaro fish are their children. This publicly shared account connects care for water with care for living relations.
The reserve recalls iwi members taking visitors through the springs by gondola in the early period of Rotorua tourism. Contemporary guided walks continue a locally led way of sharing the place.
