Overview

On the banks of the Kwanza River, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Muxima draws more than a million pilgrims annually. Built by the Portuguese in 1599, burned by the Dutch, rebuilt, and transformed by a suspected Marian apparition in 1833. Muxima means 'heart' in Kimbundu.

The village of Muxima sits on the Kwanza River, and its name means 'heart.' The Portuguese built a church and fortress in 1599. The Dutch burned it in 1641. It was rebuilt in 1655. In 1833, a suspected Marian apparition transformed it from a colonial artifact into a living pilgrimage site. Today over one million people walk there each year. The church is Portuguese colonial in style but the devotion is distinctly Angolan.
