Overview

On a hilltop above the village of Sant Miquel de Balansat in northern Ibiza stands a fortified parish church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. Built with thick defensive walls against corsair raids, its unusual cross-shaped plan is unique among Ibiza's churches. Today it remains an active parish and a stage for weekly summer performances of ball pagès, the island's traditional courtship dance.

Why this place is sacred

The church's exact founding date is unresolved: tourism and local sources variously place its origins in the 13th-14th century, a 15th-century original build, or a 16th-century main construction later enlarged with two side chapels. What is consistently reported is its dual purpose — a place of worship built with the thick walls and small windows of a refuge, meant to shelter villagers during raids by Turkish and North African corsairs along the Ibizan coast.

Combined parish worship and defensive refuge for the village during the era of corsair raids on Ibiza's coast.

A main nave was built and, according to the Balearic tourism board, later enlarged by roughly a century with the addition of the Benirràs and Rubió chapels; a parish house was added in the 18th century, and 19th-century frescoes were later uncovered in a side chapel during renovation work.

Traditions and practice

Beyond regular Mass, the church plaza hosts weekly ball pagès performances each summer Thursday — a traditional Ibizan courtship dance performed to castanets, flute, and drum, with explanations of the dance's origins and traditional dress woven between numbers.
